States with the highest number of universities in Nigeria Which State has the highest number of universities in Nigeria! According to data obtained from the  National Universities Commission (NUC) website,  Ogun State in South Western Nigeria has the highest number of universities in Nigeria. Findings reveal that Ogun State has sixteen (16) accredited universities. This includes a Federal University, two (2) State Universities, and thirteen (13) private universities. This is closely followed in second place by  Delta State  with thirteen (13) accredited universities which include two (2) federal universities, four (4) state universities, and eight (8) private universities. In the 3rd position are Lagos and Osun states with eleven (11) universities each while Zamfara and Yobe states occupy the bottom position with two universities each.
